The Primal Pendant is a one-of-a-kind lighting pendant lamp 100% handmade by artist Yi Hsuan Sung. Each agar floral pendant lamp is made with hundreds of pieces of handcrafted agar yarn and decorated to be a glowing floral arrangement through light. Every lamp is given a unique personality and carries different energy.
Yi Hsuan is a textile artist who uses agar as the main medium to create decorative floral art. Her goal is to bring nature’s beauty into interior spaces through a more sustainable material and fabrication process. She focuses on making floral pendant lamps with agar, which is a natural gel extracted from red seaweed. Her most recent research is producing natural inks to color agar flowers.
Yi Hsuan’s inspiration derives from a respect for natural materials and her love of organic colors and textures. Her work has been featured by the American Craft Council, Metropolis, NYCxDesign, Arts Thread, New York Textile Month at abc home, and others. Her pieces have been displayed in several renowned venues such as Mana Contemporary, The Met, and Governors Island. Yi Hsuan has an MFA in Textiles from Parsons School of Design and a BA in Fashion from Taipei Shih Chien University.
