Rugs & Carpets
Are your rugs suitable for homes with kids and pets?
Absolutely. Many of our durable rugs — including wool area rugs, flatweave rugs, and high-traffic area rugs — are built to withstand the demands of busy households. Natural fiber rugs like jute and wool are resilient and easy to maintain with regular care. For families, we recommend choosing contemporary rugs or modern rugs in forgiving patterns and mid-tone colors that hide everyday wear beautifully.
How should I dry my rug after cleaning?
Always air dry your rug flat in a well-ventilated area. Avoid high heat or direct sunlight during drying, as this may warp the shape or damage the fibers. For wool and silk rugs, flat drying helps preserve the rug’s structure and prevents shrinkage. Never fold or hang a wet rug, as this can permanently distort its shape.
Are your handmade rugs machine washable?
All of our handmade rugs and hand-knotted rugs are not machine washable due to the quality of their materials and construction. Smaller wool rugs and cotton rugs may be spot cleaned at home, while larger silk rugs and natural fiber rugs typically require professional rug cleaning to preserve their beauty and craftsmanship.
Do I need a non-slip rug pad for my area rug?
We recommend using a non-slip rug pad with most area rugs, especially on hardwood or tile floors. A quality rug pad provides added grip and cushioning, protects your flooring, and extends the life of your rug. A separate pad is ideal for high-traffic area rugs and larger pieces like 9x12 area rugs or 12x15 area rugs.
How should I handle a spill or stain on my rug?
Blot the spill immediately with a clean, dry cloth — never scrub, as this may damage delicate fibers in wool rugs or silk rugs. For light stains, use a mild cleaning solution and gently dab the area. For deeper stains on handcrafted rugs or Persian rugs, we recommend professional rug cleaning to avoid damage. Knowing how to clean a silk rug or wool piece properly makes all the difference in preserving its value.
Is shedding normal with wool and natural fiber rugs?
Yes, some initial shedding is completely normal, particularly with wool rugs, shag rugs, and other natural fiber rugs. This typically subsides within the first few weeks of use. Hand-knotted rugs and handmade rugs may shed slightly as loose fibers work themselves free — a sign of the rug’s natural materials, not a defect. Regular, gentle vacuuming helps manage shedding.
How often should I clean my area rug?
Vacuuming once or twice a week is ideal for most area rugs, especially in high-traffic spaces like entryways, living rooms, or dining areas. To preserve the rug’s color, texture, and longevity, we also recommend a professional deep clean once a year. Proper rug care helps protect your investment for years to come.
Can I use a vacuum with a brush roll on my rug?
For shag rugs, plush styles, and delicate silk rugs, we recommend avoiding aggressive brush rolls. Use a gentle suction setting or a handheld attachment to protect the fibers. Sturdier flatweave rugs, jute rugs, and tightly woven wool rugs can generally handle a standard vacuum. When in doubt, always default to the gentler setting — especially with antique rugs and hand-knotted pieces.
Will sunlight cause my rug to fade?
Prolonged exposure to direct sunlight may cause gradual fading over time, especially for rugs made with natural dyes. Rotating your rug periodically helps ensure even color and wear. If your rug is placed in a sun-filled room, we recommend using UV-filtering window treatments to help preserve its original color and appearance for years to come.
