With designs by visionaries from diverse fields, this limited edition Animation Glass Set from Artel features six old-fashioned glasses by futuristic Czech-Argentinian artist Federico Díaz, celebrated entomologist Vojtech Novotny, noted computer scientist Mark Pauly, award winning science fiction author Kim Stanley Robinson, interdisciplinary artist Nina Rodin, and the globally renowned conceptual artist Tomás Saraceno.
These glasses are a testament to the boundless possibilities of human expression and a tribute to bold ideas and extraordinary minds. Curated by an award-winning novelist J. M. Ledgard, a dear friend of Artels' founder Karen Feldman, these glasses are a conversation starter, a piece of art, and a celebration of life. Nothing short of astonishing in its diversity and originality.
Federico Díaz, Blue Glass: Offering the motif from his iconic work Big Light. The hand with the light bursting out of it represents a future machine intelligence that protects humanity and is a guardian for the future world. Big Light also speaks to qualia — the sensation of moments in time in an individual life that can never be recaptured. When holding the glass, you are holding one possible future.
Vojtech Novotny, Green Glass: A New Guinean Queen Alexandra's birdwing butterfly represents animation. The largest butterfly in the world, this etching represents the beauty of this highly endangered and restricted creature that is losing its habitat due to oil plantations encroaching on rainforest land in remote coastal Papua New Guinea.
Mark Pauly, Clear with Silver and Gold Swirls Glass: His design exploits a branch of mathematics called knot theory, in which two knots that look dramatically different are in fact topographically identical, meaning one can be transformed into the other without cutting or breaking the rope. It is the perfect capture of maximal energy and possibility.
Kim Stanley Robinson, Black Glass: Originating from a defining passage from his novel 2313, that captures the reintroduction of extinct animals that have been raised in space and returned home to Earth. It is literally otherworldly animation.
Nina Rodin, Clear with Circle Etchings Glass: In this unique design, Rodin has fashioned an extraordinary stereoscopic glass in which various apertures reflect the lenses in Rodin's life: a telescope, a window, a video camera, a electron microscope, and a camera. Each one of them are unique and shifting. "I have a strong sense of the world around me and it is never still."
Tomás Saraceno, Clear with Gold Shatter Glass: Saraceno has transposed the web of a golden orb-weaver spider into glass — another kind of suspension. Saraceno's glass is perhaps best seen as an example of a new animation where nature is worked through the digital, and brought back into the human domain.
