Who are you and what do you do?
— My name is Ethan Abramson, and I’m the owner of the eponymous furniture company, Ethan Abramson Furniture and Home, which started in 2008, out of New York.
Who/What has the most significant influence on your work?
— The beauty of design for me is that it comes from all different places, not just a few sources. Influence can come from anywhere, a walk through a museum or mistakenly looking at a book title upside down, and everything in-between. My design sense comes from a lifetime of collecting and cataloging images and then figuring out how all those images collage with each other to create something new.
What inspired you to create American-made, environmentally conscious handcrafted furniture?
— The way I make furniture now is a reaction to the experiences I’ve had previously. A reaction to working with overseas manufacturing or production partners who didn’t see the bigger picture beyond just the process of getting something out the door. Not to say that working like that is hands down bad, it’s all relative and depends on what you are making and how you are making it. But for me, at this point in my life, I want to run my company in a way that makes sense to me.
Why are these standards [America-made, environmentally conscious] important to you?
— The more pieces I put out into the world, the more I think of the impact those pieces have on the world. Environmental consciousness goes beyond the knee-jerk answer of just all-natural or eco-friendly. Yes, concepts like that are important and ones I strive for, but you can’t discount how much design and craftsmanship come into play when you think of sustainability. To have a piece of furniture that stays in a family for generations is also a form of environmental consciousness and sustainability.
Are you working on anything new that you’re excited about? Any new materials?
— On the custom side of my business we are always working on new and exciting projects - from full wall-to-wall library-style built-ins, to commercial office build-outs, to custom furniture pieces. I was just named to the New York Magazine ‘BEST OF NEW YORK' list for my work so I'm very much looking forward to seeing what exciting new projects come out of that.Did you always know you wanted to be an artist?
— I always knew I wanted to do something in a creative field. Where that took me was up for grabs, but being able to do something creative daily has always been the driving force behind my career decisions. You created indoor/outdoor furniture in 5 exclusive colors with abc, do you have a favorite piece from the collection?
— So hard to pick, the colors are all so energetic and fresh and set such a vibrant mood. I don’t think you could go wrong with any of them.
How do you bring magic into your home?
— A magician never reveals their secrets…but good furniture, good food, and a pet (or two) might be something to look into…
