Soumak (Sumak)

Named for the village of Shemaka in the Caucasus, Soumak rugs feature grand medallions, fine patterns, Persian garden designs, and tribal motifs surrounded by multiple sets of richly detailed borders. Soumaks are thick as they are woven by running yarn around warps in a serpentine pattern and then separating the rows by wefts.
