4x6 Rugs

4x6 rugs and other small rugs are accent pieces. Use them in entryways, beside a bed, in front of a sink or in a reading corner. They're also a good way to layer pattern or texture over a larger, plainer rug.

5x7 & 5x8 Rugs

5x8 rugs cover about 40 square feet, roughly the footprint of a three-seat sofa. The collection also includes rugs closer to 5x7. These mid-size rugs suit apartment living rooms, home offices, a small dining table, or the space beside a queen bed. In larger rooms they work best as a layering piece.

6x9 Rugs

6x9 rugs are a step up from 5x8. They're large enough to define a compact seating area or sit under a small round dining table. They're a good choice when a 5x8 feels lost but an 8x10 would crowd the room.

8x10 Rugs

8x10 rugs are the most versatile size and fit most living rooms and bedrooms. They're generous enough for the front legs of a sofa and chairs to sit on the rug, or to extend well beyond both sides of a queen bed, without taking over the room.

9x12 Rugs

9x12 rugs suit larger living rooms, formal dining rooms and king beds. In most living rooms, a 9x12 lets all four legs of the main seating sit on the rug. Rugs close to 10x12 in our catalog are usually found here or in the 10x14 collection.

10x14 Rugs

10x14 rugs anchor large living rooms, open-plan seating areas and long dining tables that seat eight or more. They give full-room coverage in many standard rooms, leaving just a border of floor around the edges.

12x15 Rugs

12x15 rugs are for grand rooms: great rooms, large open-plan spaces and generous dining rooms. At this size the rug reads almost like wall-to-wall carpet while still showing its design and a frame of floor.

Oversized Rugs

Oversized rugs go beyond standard large sizes, including rugs more than 15 feet long. They suit ballroom-scale living rooms, lofts and open-concept homes where a single rug needs to hold several seating groups together.

Runner Rugs

Runner rugs are long and narrow, typically 2½ to 4 feet wide, and our collection includes runners of 10 to 12 feet and longer. They're made for hallways, kitchens, stair landings and entries, where they protect floors and reduce noise in high-traffic paths.

Choosing the Right Rug Size for Your Room

Use this table as a starting point, then measure your room and furniture.

Living Room Rug Sizes

Aim for a rug that at least holds the front legs of your sofa and chairs. That usually means an 8x10 rug in a standard living room, and a 9x12 or 10x14 in larger rooms or with a sectional. Leave roughly 12 to 18 inches of bare floor between the rug and the walls.

A rug that's too small, floating in the middle of the seating, is the most common sizing mistake and makes the room feel smaller.

Bedroom Rug Sizes

A rug under the bed should extend 18 to 24 inches beyond each side, so you step onto it when you get up. As a rule of thumb, a full bed takes a 5x8 or 6x9, a queen bed an 8x10, and a king bed a 9x12.

Start the rug a little in front of the nightstands rather than under them. If you prefer not to put a large rug under the bed, two runners or small rugs on either side work well.

Dining Room Rug Sizes

Chairs should stay on the rug when pulled out. Measure your table and add about 24 inches on every side. A table for four usually needs at least a 6x9 or 8x10, a table for six a 9x12, and a table for eight or more a 10x14 or larger.

Match the rug's shape to the table where you can: rectangular rugs for rectangular tables, and square or round rugs for round tables.

Runner Rugs for Hallways & Transitional Spaces

Choose a runner that leaves about 4 to 6 inches of floor visible on each side and stops a few inches short of each end of the hallway. For long halls, one long runner looks cleaner than two short ones. In kitchens, a runner along the work area should stop short of the cabinet ends. On stair landings, keep the runner clear of door swings.

Standard vs. Unique Rug Sizes

Standard sizes make planning easy, but many of our rugs don't follow them. Vintage and antique rugs were woven to the dimensions of the loom, the home or the region they came from, so you'll find pieces like 5'1" × 7'6" or 3'11" × 7'10" alongside standard 5x8s. The same goes for large rugs: a room that "needs a 10x12" may be well served by a rug a few inches either side.

When shopping one-of-a-kind rugs, it helps to work from a range rather than a single size. Measure the space, decide the minimum and maximum you'd accept, and filter by width and length. If a rug you love is slightly smaller than planned, layering it over a larger, plain rug is an easy fix.
